DePuy Hip Side Effects

The DePuy ASR hip implant was released in 2005 as a durable alternative to traditional plastic or ceramic-coated replacement devices due to its all-metal construction. With aggressive marketing to younger, active patients, DePuy ASR hips were used in more than 93,000 procedures.

Unfortunately, experts have warned that the chromium and cobalt used in construction of these devices can emit toxic metal shavings into the bloodstream with wear. Some of the resulting DePuy hip side effects, such as metallic poisoning, can cause long-term injury.

Metallic poisoning and other DePuy Hip side effects have been linked to serious conditions including:

  • Tissue damage
  • Bone damage
  • Vision problems
  • Hearing problems
  • Allergic reactions
  • Tumors

As a result of these health risks and the high failure rate of metal hips, DePuy issued a recall of the ASR XL Acetabular hip implant in August of 2010. The company estimated 13% of patients may need painful revision surgery, however, experts now predict as many as 44% may need to have their devices replaced.

Now, Johnson & Johnson has announced it will pay more than $4 billion to settle lawsuits from thousands of patients who underwent surgery to replace their defective hip implants. They also plan to settle cases with those who may need surgery in the future.

If you or a loved one received a DePuy ASR hip implant, it is important to speak with a lawyer about your legal rights. You may be entitled to substantial compensation even if you haven’t yet experienced DePuy hip side effects. Contact us today.

Experts with the FDA, U.K. National Joint Registry of England & Wales and other organizations have warned against further use of metal hips due to the high failure rate and long-term health risks.

Records show that DePuy and parent company Johnson & Johnson may have known of these dangers years before they issued a recall, but failed to warn patients.

So far, more than 10,000 patients who received defective hips have filed a lawsuit over DePuy hip side effects. However, lawyers believe thousands more may still come forward after they learn of the danger or experience symptoms.

If you or a family member received the DePuy ASR or other metal hip implant, it is important to speak with a lawyer before it is too late. Lawyers are available to discuss your case at no cost and are still helping those affected file claims, however, time is limited.
