The Da Vinci surgical robot, introduced by Intuitive Surgical in 2000, has become a popular tool for soft tissue surgeries. In 2012 alone, it was used in approximately 400,000 procedures and 1,300 hospitals.
Unfortunately, experts have now raised questions about the effectiveness and safety of Da Vinci surgical robots, after higher than expected reports of injury or death to the FDA. Although there is no recall of the device, many of those affected have filed an Intuitive surgical lawsuit.
Through aggressive marketing by U.S. based Intuitive Surgical, the Da Vinci robots are now widely used in hysterectomies, gallbladder and thyroid surgeries, and various cancer surgeries. In fact, the National Cancer Institute estimates they are used in 80% of all prostate removals.
FDA records show as many as 212 injuries and 90 deaths have been linked to Da Vinci surgical robots. Many of these involve electrical burns to internal organs, damage to ureters and bowels, or instruments breaking and falling into patients. However, experts estimate thousands more patients may have been affected.
Lawyers have already filed an Intuitive surgical lawsuit for many of those injured based on the failure of the manufacturer to properly warn of Da Vinci risks, and the failure to adequately train physicians using the device.
If you or a loved one suffered burns, organ damage, injury or death from a Da Vinci robotic surgery, it is important to speak with a lawyer about your rights under an Intuitive surgical lawsuit. Contact us today for more information.
This year, the FDA launched an inquiry into the risks of Da Vinci robotic surgical machines after receiving a high number of adverse event reports.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists also issued a warning that robotic surgery is not the best method for hysterectomies, despite misleading marketing campaigns by Intuitive Surgical directly to consumers which touted it as a more beneficial option.
The Massachusetts Board of Medicine has also warned of increased reports of complications in surgeries performed with robotic devices and a CNBC report highlighted concerns with robotic surgical procedures and the growing number of injured patients filing an Intuitive surgical lawsuit.
If you or a family member suffered injury or death following a surgery performed with an Intuitive Da Vinci robot, it is important to learn about your legal options. A lawyer can explain whether your case qualifies and how long you have to take action.
Due to the complexity of medical device injury lawsuits, you should choose a lawyer with experience in this type of case and the resources to fight large medical companies. DrugRisk only recommends lawyers who have already handled Da Vinci surgical injury lawsuits.
