Over the past decade, surgical robots have transformed many widely-performed soft tissue procedures such as hysterectomies, gallbladder and thyroid surgeries, and various cancer surgeries.
The da Vinci surgical robot, released in 2000 by Intuitive Surgical, has become the most popular of these, with use in more than 367,000 surgeries last year and more than 1,300 hospitals in the United States. The National Cancer Institute estimates the machine is now used in at least 80% of all prostatectomies.
Unfortunately, experts have warned that these surgical robots present a risk for serious side effects. Recently, the FDA issued a warning to the manufacturer and many of those injured have begun filing a da Vinci surgery lawsuit.
Some of the side effects associated with robotic surgeries can include:
Lawyers are currently helping those who suffered a side effect or injury from a robotic surgery file a da Vinci surgery lawsuit due to the failure of the manufacturer to properly warn of the risks of their product or train doctors for its use.
If you or a loved one suffered side effects following a da Vinci robotic surgery, it is important to speak with a lawyer. You may be entitled to compensation from a da Vinci surgery lawsuit. Contact us today.
According to the FDA Manufacture and User Facility Device Experience (MAUDE) records, more than 212 injuries and 90 deaths have been reported due to da Vinci robotic surgery side effects. However, experts estimate the actual number of patients injured is far higher.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Massachusetts Board of Medicine and CNBC have all issued warnings which suggest patients that undergo robotic surgery may have a higher risk for injury, with no added benefit.
Also, the FDA recently issued a warning to Intuitive Surgical after the company didn’t properly report device changes, da Vinci patient side effects, or the risk of electrical arcing injury from tools touching together.
So far, there is no recall of the da Vinci surgical robot. However, those affected have the right to seek compensation through a da Vinci surgery lawsuit.
If you or a family member suffered injury or death following a robotic surgery, a lawyer can discuss your case at no cost to let you know whether it qualifies for a lawsuit and how long you have to take action.
Due to the complexity of medical device injury litigation, DrugRisk only recommends lawyers who have already handled robotic surgery lawsuits.
