Janumet Side Effects

Janumet is a popular medication used by millions of people dealing with type-2 diabetes to control high blood sugar. However, patients should be aware of Janumet side effects and recent warnings by health experts that the drug may be linked to cancer.
In the past, Janumet was linked to severe conditions including pancreatitis (chronic pancreas inflammation) and lactic acidosis (lactic acid build up). Some of the common symptoms of these Janumet side effects include:

  • pain in upper stomach spreading to the back
  • nausea, vomiting or loss of appetite
  • fast, slow or irregular heart rate
  • shortness of breath
  • swelling or rapid weight gain
  • muscle pain or weakness
  • numbness or coldness in extremities

More recently, studies have suggested that Janumet may also be related to pancreatic cancer and thyroid cancer. Pancreatic cancer is a leading cause of cancer death since it is often detected late and can spread quickly. Thyroid cancer can be less severe but still require surgery or radioactive treatment.

Common symptoms of pancreatic cancer and thyroid cancer include:

  • Lost weight or appetite
  • Pain in the upper abdomen radiating to the back
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)
  • Blood clots
  • A lump, pain or swelling in the neck
  • Difficulty swallowing or breathing
  • Hoarseness of voice
  • Frequent cough unrelated to a cold.

If you have experienced any of these Janumet side effects, it is important to speak with your doctor immediately.
It is also important to learn your legal rights. Due to the failure of Merck to properly warn of these dangers or conduct important testing, you may be entitled to compensation to help with your condition.
If you were diagnosed with pancreatic or thyroid cancer after taking Janumet, it is important to speak with a lawyer about your legal rights as soon as possible. Time to file a claim is limited. Contact us today.
The FDA first identified a link between Janumet and pancreatitis in 2009. They ordered Merck to conduct new testing then for Janumet side effects. However, an FDA violation letter sent in February of 2012 shows the drug maker delayed the testing.
By then, The University of California at Los Angeles had released a study in 2011 suggesting drugs like Janumet and Januvia may increase the risk of pancreatic cancer by 270% and thyroid cancer by 148%.
In February of 2013, the Journal for the American Medical Association published the latest study showing drugs like Janumet can double the risk of pancreatitis, a major risk factor for pancreatic cancer. Merck still has not warned about these cancer risks.
If you or a family member were diagnosed with thyroid cancer or pancreatic cancer after taking Janumet, it is important to speak with a lawyer about what help is available and how long you have to take action.
Drug injury lawsuits can involve litigation against powerful pharmaceutical companies. Therefore, it is important to choose a lawyer with this type of experience. DrugRisk only recommends lawyers and law firms that have already handled lawsuits for diabetes drug cancer.
