Women who have suffered blood clotinjuries after using the vaginal ring contraceptive NuvaRing are being alerted that experts have linked the devices to increased blood clot risks, and thenumber of claims against the manufacturer is increasing.

Based on prior litigation for similar birth control side effects, this could mean a delay in the start of trials but also increased chances for a NuvaRing settlement with the manufacturer of the devices, Merck.

Experts have warned that vaginal ring contraceptives like NuvaRing may have higher risks of blood clots than traditional birth control pills. Both the British Medical Journal and New England Journal of Medicine published studies in 2012 indicating vaginal ring contraceptives could relate to as much as a 56% increased risk of blood clots.

Recently, researchers at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital warned that the risks of NuvaRing blood clots could be even higher for women using the device who also suffer from migraines.

More than a thousand patients have already filed a NuvaRing lawsuit, which have been consolidated to a special federal court in Missouri. Now, the latest figures from a federal judicial panel show the number of NuvaRing cases has risen nearly 5% in recent months to 1,129.

At the recent American Association of Justice conference for NuvaRing held in Florida, those close to the litigation anticipated Judge Sippel could postpone the current trial start date of July 8, 2013 even further.

While the postponement of trials would slightly delay justice for some, it would allow those who have yet to file a claim more time to do so. Also, it could give more time for the parties to reach a NuvaRing settlement with the manufacturer, Merck, as happened in the popular Yaz litigation.

If you or a loved one suffered blood clots, stroke, DVT or pulmonary embolism after using NuvaRing, it is important to speak with a lawyer about your legal rights as soon as possible.

Due to the specialized nature of federal MDL drug injury cases, the DrugRisk Center only recommends lawyers and law firms who have already handled NuvaRing lawsuits.
