Drug giant Bayer Pharmaceuticals announced last month that, following FDA approval of their new Intra-Uterine Device contraceptive Skyla, they will release the product in the United States beginning in early February.
Patients taking the birth control drugs Yaz or Yasmin have been warned of studies showing they may be at a higher risk of dangerous blood clots due to the hormone drospirenone. Thousands have now filed lawsuits over these injuries in the U.S. and Europe and Bayer has stepped up efforts to settle the claims in the United States.
As German drug maker Boehringer Ingelheim prepares to defend hundreds of lawsuits claiming that its blockbuster anticoagulant Pradaxa caused severe or fatal internal bleeding without proper warning, drug safety experts continue to debate whether the medicine is more dangerous than prior alternatives.
The latest information released by the joint panel on multidistrict litigation indicates more than 1,000 patients have now filed a NuvaRing lawsuit over allegations the contraceptive led to blood clot injuries.
