Pradaxa - Blood Thinning Atrial Fibrillation Drug

pradaxa informationPradaxa is the brand name version of the chemical dabigatran, a blood thinner prescribed to patients with atrial fibrillation in order to prevent blood clots, stroke and pulmonary embolism.

The German drug company Boehringer Ingelheim has sold Pradaxa in the United States since October of 2010. The company claims the drug has hit the blockbuster mark with over $1 billion in yearly sales and use in more than 70 countries. Unfortunately, recent reports indicate Pradaxa may have serious health risks.

On December 7, 2011 the FDA warned that it was investigating Pradaxa for more injury or death reports than expected. USA Today reported that in 2011, the FDA received reports of 3,781 side effects and 542 deaths among Pradaxa users, more than all other medications.

Some of the side effects related to Pradaxa include:

  • Increased risk of heart attacks
  • Bleeding in the kidneys
  • Bleeding in the brain
  • Bleeding in the intestines

Due to the number of patients filing legal claims for internal bleeding injury or death, Pradaxa lawsuits have now been consolidated to a special federal court in Illinois and a judge recently ruled that the maker of the drug will have to face the lawsuits.

If you or a loved one were affected by internal bleeding after taking Pradaxa, it is important to learn about your legal options. You may be entitled to substantial compensation. Contact us today to speak with a lawyer.

In September of 2012, The Journal for The American Medical Association warned that the FDA may have rushed approval of the drug Pradaxa, overlooking key side effects like internal bleeding.

While all blood thinner medications can cause internal bleeding, others like Coumadin can be effectively treated with reversal agents such as PCC (prothrombin complex concentrate), plasma and vitamin K.

A March 6, 2012 report by the Journal of Neurosurgery detailed a specific case and complaints by doctors that once Pradaxa causes internal bleeding, there is very little they can do to stop it.

Lawyers are currently helping those affected by Pradaxa side effects file claims against the manufacturer. If you or a loved one suffered internal bleeding, it is important to learn your legal options and how long you have to take action.

Before you choose a lawyer, make sure they are qualified for this type of lawsuit and have experience fighting large drug companies. The Drug Resource Center only recommends law firms that specialize in Pradaxa lawsuits.
